Building Attendance Through Extracurriculars: Tips and Strategies

Maintaining strong attendance rates continues to be a challenge for schools as we move beyond virtual learning. Schools utilize many different tools to increase attendance, and for middle school students, access to extracurricular activities can be a powerful incentive. Extracurriculars give students a reason to come to school, fostering a sense of belonging, pride, and motivation that transcends the classroom. Here are five ways Start 1 Spark’s focus on expanding access to extracurricular activities supports greater attendance among students.

1. Diversify Activity Offerings

Not every student is going to be drawn to the same activity. Some may be passionate about sports, while others may excel in art, music, debate, or coding. Offering a wide variety of extracurriculars ensures that every student has the chance to find an activity that interests them. But starting, or reviving activities, requires funding and resources which disadvantaged schools and their students don’t have access to. Last year, Falling Creek Middle School decided it was time to bring the theater program back. With support from Start 1 Spark’s volunteers and corporate donations, students had set pieces, stage props, and team shirts to perform a comedic version of Jack and the Beanstalk.

2. Involve Students in Decision-Making

Students are more likely to participate in activities they helped create or shape. Schools can also empower students to take on leadership roles within these extracurriculars, fostering a sense of ownership that encourages commitment and attendance. Salem Church Middle School launched a series of clubs last winter based on student interests and input. With Start 1 Spark’s support this year with resources and mentors, Salem Church intends to double the number of clubs offered from 14 to 30 this school year.

3. Promote School Spirit and Culture

Extracurricular activities contribute greatly to a school’s culture and identity. Promoting school spirit through sports teams, music bands, or performing arts groups can foster a sense of pride and belonging among students. When students feel they are part of something larger than themselves, they are more likely to attend school regularly. Last year, a video of the John Rolfe Middle School gig band performing at a school pep rally went viral on Instagram; band members  walked the hallways with a new sense of pride and accomplishment. By renting instruments for students, Start 1 Spark provides the platform for student achievement and greater self-respect.

4. Build Relationships Between Students and Staff

Extracurriculars provide a valuable opportunity for students to connect with teachers and staff outside of the classroom setting. These relationships can be transformative, offering students mentorship, guidance, and support. When students have a positive relationship with a coach, advisor, or club leader, they are more likely to come to school, even if they are struggling in other areas. Because teachers and staff see students in the hallways throughout the day, they are aware of the day’s events and can better help students navigate situations during the additional time spent together in extracurricular activities.

5. Highlight Success Stories

Publicly recognizing students who participate in extracurriculars can build excitement and encourage others to get involved. Each month, Start 1 Spark spotlights a student as our monthly spark. In addition to featuring the student throughout our communications, we provide each student with a framed copy of their write-up as well as a copy for the school to post in the building. By showcasing the benefits of participation, Start 1 Spark and our partner schools can create a culture where extracurricular involvement is seen as desirable and prestigious, motivating students to attend school to be part of these experiences.

Conclusion: Building a Culture of Engagement

Extracurricular activities are more than just fun ‘extras’ to a student’s school experience; they are critical components to boosting student engagement and attendance. By offering a diverse range of options, fostering student involvement, building strong relationships, and linking extracurriculars with academic and personal success, schools can create an environment where students want to be present. Ultimately, building attendance through extracurriculars is about creating a school culture where students feel connected, motivated, and inspired to come to school every day.

By investing in extracurricular programs, Start 1 Spark helps schools see attendance rates rise as students find a renewed sense of purpose and community within their school walls.
